Here is a list of new flowers I am growing this year. I start seeds in either sterile seed-starting mix (ideal) or potting soil and put them under fluorescent lights in my basement. I can show you a photo of my set-up. I normally start the process in mid-February but I started in mid-March this year.
White Jupiter's Beard (I currently have the red variety)
Echinacea (Pow Wow Berry)
Echinacea (purple)
White Marvelette Calamintha
Snapdragons (various colors)
Maltese cross
Lupine (various colors)
Brown-eyed Susan
Russian sage (Blue Steel, a compact variety)
I order most of my seeds from a California company called Swallowtail Seeds. I have ordered from two other seed companies in the past and ended up with poor germination rates from other seed companies. I mix a mix of traditional and uncommon perennials that can handle heat and drought. I have a one year old toddler at home, and as such, I don't have time to water my garden, and I don't have much time to fertilize. I do recommend fish fertilizer (various brands sold) to be added to flowers once or twice a growing season because the flowers really seem to love it and it seems healthier for my plants than Miracle Grow. I try my best to pick flowers that deer do not enjoy, as deer love to browse in our garden. To prevent deer from eating my seedlings, I spray Deer Stopper and similar products onto my flowers once every three weeks.
